North & South Women's: Lee out front

Alison Lee fires 2-under 69 at Pinehurst to take a one stroke lead in first round of match play qualifying

by Jack Persons, AmateurGolf.com VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, N.C. (July 15, 2014) -- UCLA star Alison Lee has the lead after the first round of the North & South Women’s Amateur. Lee shot 2-under 69 at Pinehurst No. 8 on Tuesday, and leads Stanford’s Lauren Kim by a stroke. “I just played really consistently,” said Lee in an interview with media after her round. “I didn’t make too many mistakes, didn’t miss too many greens…and when I did, I was able to get up and down. I gave myself chances on every hole to make birdie.” She did not make many birdies on the day, only carding three on the fifth, seventh, and 15th holes, but rarely made any mistakes, and when she did, she still managed to make par. Her lone bogey of the day came at the short par-4 14th. Kim’s day was a tale of two sides. Though she birdied the fifth to get to one-under, she made bogey on seven and nine to make the turn at one over. Her back nine was solid, however, as she finished with three birdies on the last five holes and a single bogey for a one-under 70. Defending champion Ally McDonald is in the mix this week as well, as she posted a one-over 72 and is tied for eighth after the first round. The event consists of three rounds of stroke play qualifying, with the top 16 scores after three rounds making match play. Currently, there are eight players tied for 15th place at two-over 73. The 6419-yard layout played tough for the rest of the field today, as the average score was 77.7. For results and scoring for upcoming rounds, check the link below.
