North and South Women's: Arseneault is medalist

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, N.C. (July 15, 2008)--Jennie Arseneault captured medalist honors by one stroke and was awarded the Putterboy trophy after the qualifying stroke play rounds at the 106th Women’s North and South Amateur Championship at Pinehurst today. The UVA rising senior and Women’s Western Amateur champion carded a 70-71--144 on Nos. 2 and 8 respectively, one less than UCLA rising senior Ryann O’Toole, who shot a low 6-under par in yesterday’s No. 8 round and finishing today with a 76 on No. 2. Both enter the match play field of 64 beginning tomorrow morning on Pinehurst No. 2, as defending champion Alison Walshe, a recent graduate of the University of Arizona, assumes the #1 seed. Only five women, including Duke’s Jennie Lee, shot under par in the two-round total that included play on No. 2, playing at a 6,472-yard par 73, and the par-72, 6,253-yard course at No. 8. Twelve women scoring 155 vied for nine remaining spots in a playoff on No. 2 to advance to match play late in the day. ****Other rounds of note**** -Cheyenne Woods, Wake Forest incoming freshman and niece to Tiger Woods, recorded a 73-77—150 to enter mach play -Marika Lendl shot 73-77—150 to advance to match play; her sister Isabel carded a 78-81-159 (both daughters of tennis champion Ivan Lendl) -After a disappointing 79 yesterday, Meghan Bolger rallied with a 75 today for a two-day total of 154 to enter the match play field -Birmingham native and Auburn rising junior Candace Schepperle, last year’s medalist, shot 72-78—150. --Courtesy Pinehurst
