Nipomo Am: Tight win for Silvernail

With four players on his heals at 142, Brett Silvernail takes home the Nipomo Amateur at Monarch Dunes

NIPOMO, California (January 12, 2014) -- Brett Silvernail shot 68-73 over the weekend in the California Central Coast town of Nipomo to emerge victorious in the Nipomo Amateur over a pack of four players that tied at 142, just a single shot behind him. Silvernail, a Junior at University of California Santa Barbara, has enjoyed success in events outside of collegiate golf in the past two years. He advanced to the round-of-32 in the California State Am in 2012 and won the Santa Barbara City in 2013. Joey Downey made a final-round surge and nearly knocked off the wire-to-wire winner. Trailing by four after Round 1, Downey moved from 10th place all the way to solo second. His final-round 70 nearly caught Silvernail's total. Chris Doyle (68-74, Rory Doll (73-69) and Johnny Hogan (69-73) also finished one shot off the lead. Rob Vine and James Johnson also won Net Division titles.
