GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sept. 20, 2012) -- Team New York rallied on Day 2 at the 2012 USGA State Team Championship and heads into Friday's final round with a one shot lead.
New York was five shots back of first-round leader North Carolina after Wednesday's opening round but went low with an even-par 71 from Max Buckley and a 2-under 69 from Michael Miller. The duo's scores were good enough for a second-round 140 and a one shot lead at 145-140--285 through two days at Galloway National.
One shot behind New York is the team from Iowa, which received a 1-under 70 from Dennis Bull and a 1-over 72 from Gene Elloiot in Round 2 to bounce back after trailing the leader by four after Wednesday's opening round.
Pennsylvania, which features recently-crowned U.S. Mid-Am champion Nathan Smith, is three shots behind the leaders at 288. Smith shot an even-par 71 Thursday while Sean Knapp posted a 2-over 73.
North Carolina, which held the first-round lead is now in a 10th place tie. After getting a 2-under 69 from Bruce Woodall and an even-par 71 from Paul Simson in Round 1, the Tar Heel state struggled with a 75 from Scott Harvey and Simson's 80 on Day 2.
