Michael Winkler Wins Kansas Mid-Amateur at Milburn CC

Newcomer Michael Winkler cards a final round 69 to win the Kansas Mid-Amateur in his first try

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Overland Park's Michael Winkler claimed the 27th Mid-Amateur Championship on Tuesday at Milburn Country Club in Overland Park. The 35-year Winkler, a recent transplant to Kansas, posted a final round 3-under par 69 to finish at 2-under par 142 total. Lawrence's Bradley Lane finished in solo second after finishing at 1-under par 143 total. Wichita's Spencer Christian took third at 1-over par 145. Lyons' Tim McKinnis and Raytown's Steve Groom tied for low gross in the senior division at 2-over par 146 total. Yesterday's leader, Brad Pfaltzgraff, blew up to go 10-over on the day and take himself out of contention. Last year, Jon Troutman claimed his fourth KGA Mid-Amateur Championship in the last nine years. Previous years were 2006, 2007 and 2011. He was not in the field this year. The Mid-Amateur Championship is open to KGA golfers age 25 & older. The championship format is 36 holes of individual stroke play with gross and net scoring within three age divisions.
