LINCOLNSHIRE, ENGLAND (May 23, 2017) - Matt Wilcox ran away with the British Mid-Amateur Championship, never trailing over the course of 54 holes firing an impressive 69-73-72 214 to win the stroke-play championship.
Held at the Hotchkins Course at Woodhill, the British Mid-Am has a different designation than that in the United States. In a press release, a “Mid-Amateur” is described as “[Any] male golfer of any nationality aged over 35 years on 22nd May 2017 and with an official, active handicap of 9.4 or less.”
A total of 77 golfers started the competition with hopes of claiming the title but after the first round it was clear that Wilcox was a cut above the competition. After the first round, Wilcox opened up a two-stroke lead shooting a 69.
Over the next two rounds the course played much harder and no competitor broke 70. Wilcox followed up his first two rounds with a solid 73 and 72 as he never trailed in the competition.
Andrew Day came in second shooting 73-70-75 218 to put him four strokes behind Wilcox. In quick succession, places 2-8 were separated by only 7-strokes.
Reigning English Mid-Amateur champion Jorg Paulus finished third after a rough second round – Paulus shot 71-78-70 219. Geoffrey Harris (220) and Douglas Thorburn (221) rounded out the top 5.
The winner of last year's event, James Bishop, finished 8th shooting 75-74-76 225.
