SAN DIEGO, CA (July 17, 2016) -- For the second time in three years the San Diego City Amateur was determined by a playoff. Following the completion of 54-holes Marc Hedrick and Sam Engel were tied at 4-under, thus sending play at the Torrey Pines South Course to extra holes. After the players tied the 18th hole, Marc Hedrick was able to win the second playoff hole, the 7th, and win the tournament.
The first two rounds were played at Balboa Park where Hedrick shot rounds of 72-70 to enter the final round 2-under. Playing at Torrey Pines the Princeton sophomore put together a round of 2-under 70. On the front nine Hendrick carded two birdies, a bogey, a double-bogey and a huge eagle on the par-5 6th. With nine holes left to play Henrick still had some work to do and he was able to birdie Nos. 13 and 18, offsetting a bogey on the 16th. The birdie on No. 18 was ultimately the stroke that qualified Hedrick for the playoff.
His playoff opponent, Sam Engel, reached the playoff with rounds of 71-69-72. Engel, 4-under to start the day, was 2-under on his round and 6-under for the week before bogeying holes 12 and 14 to drop back 4-under. A birdie on any of the four remaining holes would have won the tournament for Engel but the Cal State Northridge senior parred out.
Three players; Redford Bobbitt, Cody Hall and Tyler Moore finished tied for third at 3-under.
Danny Ochoa, the final player under-par, finished 1-under and in sixth.
