OAKLAND, Maine (Aug. 30, 2011) -- Three state junior championships. Thirteen amateur titles. Four mid-amateur championships. And now three senior championships. Not bad in 59 years.
Mark Plummer grabbed his third senior title Tuesday at Waterville Country Club, holding off a charging Gary Laliberte and making birdie on the 18th hole to secure the victory. After Laliberte parred 17 and Plummer missed a three-footer for his par, the two came down the 18th hole all sqaure. Rounding out the group was first-round leader Dan Proulx, Waterville's home-town favorite.
Laliberte's drive just missed the fairway bunker but got hung up in the long grass on the lip and his approach shot went long. A solid chip left him in a nice position to salvage the par, but when Plummer sunk his 12-footer for birdie, it didn't matter. Plummer had added his name to the record books yet again.
Laliberte ended two back of Plummer in a three-way tie with Ron Dery and Alan Bouchard. All three players will take home top honors in their flights -- Dery in the 55-59 age division, Laliberte in the 60-64 and Bouchard in the 65-69. Proulx finished fifth overall at 147. Dale Brown topped off the results by winning the 71+ age division with a score of 152.
