Judith Kyrinis wins Canadian Women's Mid-Amateur by five

PONOKA, Alberta (August 26, 2016) -- Judith Kyrinis began the final day of the Canadian Women’s Mid-Amateur tied for the lead but left little to doubt on Friday by firing the only under-par round of the day, a 4-under 68, that put her at 2-under for the week and ahead of the field by five-strokes. “To shoot a final-round 68 is pretty cool, you feel really good. It’s great for that memory bank and going forward, I just hope I keep drawing on that again (because) coming up, I’ve got the U.S. Mid-Am and U.S. Senior,” Kyrinis told Golf Canada. Kyrinis, who recently won her second straight Senior Women’s North & South Amateur, started the day at Wolf Creek Golf Course equal with Margo Dickinson at 2-over but pulled away early with a 5-under stretch of golf from Nos. 4-9. The surge began with a birdie on the 4th and then kicked into high gear with eagle on the par-5 6th before concluding with birdies on Nos. 8 and 9. After turning in 5-under 31 and 3-under for the week, Kyrinis slipped up a bit with bogeys on Nos. 10, 12 and 13 before rebounding and taking command of the tournament once more with back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th holes. The win in the Mid-Amateur Division wasn't the only victory of the week for Kyrinis as she completed a clean sweep by claiming the Mid-Master and Senior Division's as well. With her Senior Division title Kyrinis earned an exemption into the 2016 U.S. Women's Senior Amateur. “It’s something I’ve always dreamed of for a very long time, so I’m pretty proud,” Kyrinis said of winning all three titles a year after finishing runner-up in each division. The next closest contender in the Mid-Amateur Division was Helene Chartrand who finished 3-over and in second place. Christina Proteau was third at 7-over, second round co-leader Margo Dickinson was 8-over in fourth while Terrill Samuel was 12-over and in fifth. -Golf Canada contributed to this story
