John Hefner claims Kim Brown Memorial

Hefner battles gusty conditions and a tough Keeton Park G.C. for the 2011 Kim Brown Memorial.

With temperatures in the mid-80s and pleasant south-side wind, competitors at the Kim Brown Memorial were treated to one of the region's best days Saturday. And first-round scores at Keeton Park Golf Club were a good indicator of the pleasantness of the day as many golfers, including John Hefner, who fired a 2-under 70 for the low round of the two-day event. Sunday's scene wouldn't be quite as pleasant as winds increased to a blustery 25-40 miles per hour. Scores would increase too as no golfers were able to break par. In the end, Hefner's first-round efforts were enough to separate him from the pack following a second-round 74. His two-round total of 144 was four shots better than runner-up Doug McKeever, who shot 1-over 73 in the second round but couldn't overcome a five-shot deficit following the first round.
