IRVING, Texas (April 3, 2015) -- Jerry Hudgins,
playing in only his second North
Senior Amateur championship, was seven shots
behind first round leader Chuck Palmer, when he
opened with a triple bogey after pulling his drive
left.
Hudgins quickly bounced back with back to back
birdies on holes two and three and once again on
six
and seven which he dropped, “60 footer,” Hudgin
recalls.
It was the par five eleventh that Hudgins self-
descried “was the real kicker.” The Tyler
resident
knocked it to eight feet and sank the putt.
Hudgins
birdied 15 and 16 that were ultimately evened
out by
bogeys. (The 17th and 18th holes proved to be
difficult with high winds that plagued the final
round.)
Dave Davis, the 2014 North Senior Amateur
runner-
up, made it interesting by posting a day best
three
under par, 68. Davis from Saginaw, went on an
incredible run on the back nine, where he
recorded
four birdies and an eagle in a six hole stretch.
His
two day total 146 was the clubhouse lead until
the
second to last group that included Hudgins.
Jerry Gatti, in his first year of Super Senior
eligibility, used local knowledge and consistent
play
to win the Super Senior division of the North
Senior
Amateur. The Irving native had just three birdies
for
the tournament but it was his 26 pars that lead
him
to an 11 shot championship win. Gatti played his
final round at one over par, 72, to seal the
victory.
