SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (Oct. 21, 2012) -- You could say Jeff Coburn of Rancho Santa Margarita enjoys his October weekends at the San Clemente City Championship. He won the tournament in 2009, finished second in 2010, third in 2011, and grabbed another trophy this year.
Coburn played steady golf at San Clemente Municipal Golf Course over the misty, cloudy "British Isles" weather weekend, firing rounds of 68-67 for a 9-under par total of 135.
Dan Sullivan finished two strokes back at 137, while Joey Davis and Matt McGeeney were tied for third at 138.
Casey Strohsahl posted the low round of the tournament, a 6-under 66 on Sunday that, paired with his 73 in the first round, vaulted him up the leaderboard into a tie for 5th with Rob Funk and Riley Murphy at 139.
The San Clemente City Championship is a staple on the October golf calendar in Southern California, and continues to draw a full field of 160 scratch players the range from high school golf team members all the way through senior "legends" like former USGA Senior Amateur Champion Kemp Richardson (he finished 15th at even par).
After Saturday's round a cut is made to the top half of the field, exactly. This year a USGA card playoff eliminated one unlucky player, as there were a total of 81 players at 77 or better. Those surviving the cut are presented with a memento with the inscription "I made the cut."
