PACIFIC GROVE, CA (May 7, 2017) - The Carmel, CA duo of Jeff Britton and Frank Pieper have won the Senior Championship of the AmateurGolf.com 2017 Monterey Four-Ball presented by Callaway Golf hosted by Pacific Grove Golf Links.
The tandem combined rounds of 67-63--130 to win in wire-to-wire fashion. On Sunday they didn't allow another team to make a run thanks to a final round 63 that matched the low round of the tournament.
For Britton and Pieper the highlight of the final day came on the 265 yard par-4 4th when Britton missed an ace by a foot.
"Not only was it a foot away but it was a behind the hole. We have no idea how it didn't go in," Britton said.
Defending champions Mitch Harrison (Acampo, CA) and Charles Richesin (Lodi, CA) recovered from a first round 71 to match the low round of the tournament with Sunday 63 and post a second place 134. In third it was Wayne Bass (Clayton, CA) and Michael Harding (Encinitas, CA) at 68-68--136, fourth place was taken by Neil Duffy (Santa Cruz, CA) and Pete Wlodkowski (Carlsbad, CA) at 71-67--138 while Casey Boyns (Monterey, CA) and Mark Miller (Brentwood, CA) took fifth at 72-67--139.
NET DIVISION
In the Net Division the San Jose, CA team of long hitting Gary Beene and Del Masters captured the title with scores of 62-62--124.
Why long hitting Gary Beene? Well on Sunday he uncorked a 380 yard drive on the par-5 12th and he only had a sand wedge left into the green.
"I really got a hold of that one," Beene said. "I sliced it about 50 yards too and I ended up playing the dogleg perfectly."
In second place it was Scott Carelli (Menlo Park, CA) and Abi Vickram (San Jose, CA) at 68-59--127 while the top-five was round out by a trio of teams from Modesto, CA.
Third place was taken by Frank Borges and Brad Pezoldt (64-67--131) and in fourth it was Luis Miranda and Stephen Mort (69-63--132); Butch Pirrone and Tom Slater (65-57--132)
About the AGC Monterey Four-Ball: The AmateurGolf.com Tour competes at some of the finest resort courses in California. But one of our favorite venues is a "muni" in little Pacific Grove, where anyone can stop by and play golf along the famed 17 Mile Drive for under $75. It's short, quirky, and subject to the ever changing winds and weather of its more famous neighbors Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill.
