Home Course Superintendent Wins Arkansas Match Play

Hurricane Country Club assistant course superintendent Efren Gonzalez wins the Arkansas State Match Play on his home course

Efren Gonazalez spends alot of time at Hurricane Country Club in Bryant – usually on the back of a mower or other piece of maintenance equipment as assistant course superintendent. But when the work day is through, he often practices or plays the course. A “self-taught” amateur, with a “few pointers here and there,” Gonzalez has only been playing about five years and played “some really good golf today” in winning the 44th ASGA Men’s Match Play Title. He was five-under for 16 holes in the 3 & 2 championship match against Chris Jenkins. Gonzalez struggles to hold the 40+ pound Roy Wood Trophy and is flanked by his boss, (left) Nick Birch, Course Superintendent & General Manager Jake Friedman.
