Gulliver, Tan win Tasmanian Amateur titles

Hayden Gulliver had to work to get past Paul Read but Shannon Tan won on the 10th hole.

TASMANIA, Australia (Nov. 27, 2018) – Hayden Gulliver is the Tasmanian Amateur champion after defeating Paul Read, 5 and 4, at Tasmania Golf Club in Tuesday’s 36-hole final. Gulliver advanced to match play as the No. 9 seed earlier this week.

The Australian won close matches in the first and second rounds. He then took down Daniel Gill, 4 and 3, in the semifinals to reach the championship match. Gulliver also qualified for match play at the Australian Amateur earlier this year but fell in the Round of 32.

As for runner-up Read, he was the top seed in match play in 2016 but lost in the semifinals that year.

The women’s division champion was crowned after a much more lopsided championship match. Shannon Tan defeated Isabelle Simpson, 9 and 8.

Peter Shaw won the senior title after his 1-up defeat of Brian Gulliver.
