Duke takes sizable 36-hole LSU Tiger Golf Classic Lead

The final round of the LSU Tiger Golf Classic won't be played until Sunday because of an inclement Saturday forecast

BATON ROUGE, LA (March 24, 2017) -- With inclement weather on tap for Saturday the teams at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic played a 36-hole first day and it is a Duke team looking for their first win of the season that holds a big lead. The Blue Devils at 5-under, will carry a 13-stroke lead into the final round at The University Club, a closing round that won't be played until Sunday due to the impending forecast. Leona Maguire, the top-ranked amateur in the world, is pacing Duke thus far and following rounds of 67-68 she is 9-under and the individual leader by five-strokes. Maguire bogeyed her first hole of the day but from then on she only dropped one other shot while birdieing nine-times and eagling once. On Sunday Maguire, who won the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, will be making a bid for her second victory of the season. Duke was helped to the lead by Virginia Elena Carta (T2; -4) and Gurbani Singh (T13; +3). In the individual standings along with Elena Carta in second place is Julianne Alvarez (Washington), Cara Gorlei (Arkansas) is fourth at 2-under while Sarah Bae (NC State) is in fifth at 1-under. Behind Duke in the team standings, it is Oklahoma State (+8); Arkansas (+8) in a tie for second, North Carolina State (+12) is in fourth and SMU (+19); Denver (+19) tied for fifth. Hole-In-One Alert: Ariadna Fonseca of Kansas recorded an ace on the 159 yard par-3 13th.
