Doug Pool defends Golfweek Senior title

Pool went wire-to-wire to win by one over Jeff Burda and a loaded field at PGA West's Stadium Course

LA QUINTA, Calif. (April 23, 2013) -- Doug Pool completed a masterful run, closing with a final-round even-par 72 to win the 2013 Golfweek Senior Amateur, successfully defending his 2012 title at PGA West’s Stadium Course Pool led from the start, posting rounds of 71-73 on Sunday and Monday, keeping distance from a surging leaderboard that included some of the top senior players on the west coast. Jeff Burda, who last week won the Society of Seniors Masters, finished one shot back and alone in second place at 1-over. His final-round 1-under 71 was nearly enough to catch Pool. Terry Foreman (77-70-74--221) and Bob Kain (76-72-73--221) tied for third place at 5-over alongside amateurgolf.com Player Staff Member Cy Whitney who rallied with a final-round 72. Ted Smith won with ease in the Super Senior Division. Despite a final-round 76, Smith won by six shots over runners-up Gaylord Davis and Joe Pavoni. Robert Wernick prevailed over Walt Martin by one shot to take the Super Senior Legend Division. Wernick struggled with a final-round 78 but it was just enough to top Martin’s closing 76. Gus Kozina and Michael Mahoney were tied in third, six shots behind the winner.
