Doug Hanzel goes low on final day to win Florida Azalea Senior

A ridiculous 63 in the final round from 2013 U.S. Senior Amateur champion Doug Hanzel surged him to a three-shot win

PALATKA, Fla. — Doug Hanzel carded a 63 — the lowest round of the tournament by three shots — in the final round of the Florida Azalea Senior Invitational to surge into first place and take home the title at Palatka Golf Club. The second-round lead was held by Andy Gabelman of Elmhurst, Ill., who opened with rounds of 67 and 70. But Gabelman struggled to 76 on Sunday and lost control of his lead. He slid back into a tie for fourth place with Michael Mercier (71-72-70). Hanzel, the 2013 U.S. Senior Amateur winner from Savannah, Ga., shot a first-round 73, followed by a 69 on Saturday before going super low on day three to claim the title. Taking second place was Frank Dial of Auburn, Ala. thanks to his final-round 66. He began the tournament shooting back-to-back 71s. Third place went to Randy Elliott of Winter Park, Fla. (69-75-68). In the Super Senior division, Berger Warner won by three over Frank Perrry. Berger, of Ocala, Fla., opened with 67 on Friday and went wire-to-wire. His five-under par 67 was one of just five red numbers posted in the Super Senior division.
