Savannah, GA (July 24, 2015) – The field is doing their collective best to bring the Donald Ross-designed Wilmington Island Club to its knees and beg for mercy at the 2015 Oglethorpe Invitational. Yesterday’s low round of 63, put together by Brunswick’s Travis Williamson, was just one of 21 scores posted in the 60s.
Today, the action was even hotter as a total of 34 players posted rounds in the 60s. Leading the charge is Jacksonville’s Dillon Board, who has carded back-to-back 64s to go 14-under (128) on the par-71 course. Board is five strokes ahead of a group of four who are tied for second at 133 – Travis Williamson, Elki Kow of Jakarta, Idonesia, Matthew Rushton of Cape Town, South Africa, and James Mishoe IV, from Cary, North Carolina.
With players shooting such low scores, it seems that a lead isn’t safe, especially in a talented field where 30 players are within 10 strokes of the leader. The only thing that could hold the players back is weather, which was the reason for a short delay in finishing Friday’s round. The weekend weather looks promising, however.
Today’s 36 hole cut reduced the field to the top 60 players and ties. Even par 142 was the cut line.
This year the tournament will be celebrating its 33rd anniversary. The Oglethorpe Invitational is recognized as Savannah's premier amateur golf tournament and continues to grow in prominence.
