Despite that round, Cummins had more work to do at the Sun Bowl Marathan All-America Golf Classic. He had vaulted from a tie for ninth to a tie for first on Tuesday, and only won the title after making one last birdie on the first playoff hole to win.
It was the first time since 2011 that the All-America Classic was decided in a playoff.
Cummins, who hails from Weatherford, Okla., had 17 birdies and an eagle over three rounds of play and finished the tournament at 13 under. He tied the record for the best individual round with his final-round 62. Cummins won the 2016 Oklahoma Amateur and was runner-up at the Sunnehanna Amateur this summer. Most recently, he finished the fall season with a runner-up finish at the Ka’anapali Collegiate.
In second place, Georgia’s Spencer Ralston also had a 13-under tournament total that eclipsed his previous best of 12 under set at the 2018 Linger Longer Invitational. He made a tournament-high 19 birdies during the tournament, including nine during his second-round 7-under 64, which matched his personal best from two previous events. He bookended that 64 with rounds of 68.
Clemson’s Bryson Nimmer, of Bluffton, S.C., entered the final round in first but could not keep pace with Cummins, who marked a 10-under-par in on Tuesday. Nimmer shot a 1-under-par 70 in the final round of play.
