Corey Pereira Close to a Repeat at Sierra Players Invitational

Defending champion Corey Pereira separates himself from the field with a 7-under 65

MEADOW VISTA, Calif. (June 28, 2016) -- Defending champion Corey Pereira went from tied for the lead to five-shots clear of the field with a 2nd round 7-under 65. The University of Washington rising senior from Cameron Park, Calif. is already past the 10-under mark that won him this tournament last year. His 11-under total puts him five ahead of Memorial Amateur champion Ben Corfee, who shot a 6-under 66 after opening with 72. Stanford sophomore Chris Myers shares third with Fresno State's Alex Lee at 5-under. University of Redlands graduate Jeremy Gomberg rounds out the top 5 at 3-under par. The final round begins tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 pm local time. ROUND ONE STORY The 2016 Sierra Players Invitational is underway at Winchester Country Club and two familiar names are leading the way. Last year's champion Corey Pereira and last year's runner-up Alex Lee are tied at the top after each opening with a 4-under 68. Pereira is continuing his strong play coming off a top 5 at the Northeast Amateur just last Saturday. Seven other players opened under par Monday including Cal State Fullerton's Mark Cobey (69), Stanford's Chris Meyers (70), U of A bound David Laskin (70), Jeremy Gomberg (70), Anthony Manguary (70), along with Isiah Salinda (71) and Logan Lowe (71). This is the second running of the Sierra Players created by Phillip Dawson Jr., a Sacramento-area PGA Professional. The 2nd round will begin tomorrow at 9am local time.
