South Korean Hye-Jin Choi is 1-under and the low amateur after two rounds of play. Choi has carded rounds of 72-71 and is presently tied for 20th. On Friday Choi began her round on the 10th hole and got off to a rocky double-bogey, bogey start. However, from the 12th hole on Choi was solid as she rolled in six birdies and only two more bogeys. Her birdies came on holes 12, 14, 15, 18 and then after starting her final nine, Nos. 4 and 7.
Choi, who will begin her third round on the first hole at 9:01 a.m. PDT, is seven-strokes behind leader Sung Hyun Park.
Following an even-par 72 on Thursday Albane Valenzuela shot a 3-over 75 to fall just inside the cut line. During her Friday round Valenzuela, tied for 48th birdied two holes, bogeyed three and double-bogeyed one. The Switzerland native will start her third round at 9:30 a.m. PDT on the 10th hole.
American Hannah O'Sullivan combined rounds of 72-75 and finished 3-over and like Valenzuela made the cut by a single stroke. O'Sullivan, tied for 48th, continued her outward nine struggles on Friday. After starting on the 10th hole and parring the first 11 holes of her round O'Sullivan seemed to be cruising along as she birdied Nos. 3 and 5 to reach 2-under for the tournament with just four holes remaining.
However, as can happen in a U.S. Open the wheels began to fall off for O'Sullivan who double-bogeyed the 6th and then bogeyed the final three holes of her round to finish in 4-over 39. Fortunately, O'Sullivan had created enough cushion and she was able to qualify for the weekend for the second straight year.
O'Sullivan will begin Saturday's round at 9:42 a.m. PDT and tee of on the 10th hole.
