Chet Hrostek captures Connecticut Mid-Am in playoff

Chet Hrostek had a good week at the 28th Connecticut Mid-Amateur. He tied the low score in each of the first two rounds, and his birdie on no. 18 in today’s final round left him at 3-over for the week. A double bogey on the par-3 12th hole kept him from winning the tournament outright, but his 3-over total (219) left him in a tie with Dave Szewczul. Szewczul’s birdie on the final hole gave him a round of 71, tying him for the low round of today and 3-over for the tournament. Hrostek struck early with a birdie on the first playoff hole to top off his week with a victory. The New Milford resident won the Danbury Amateur in July and the Connecticut Public Links in August. He was the medalist in the 2005 Connecticut Amateur before losing on the Round of 16, and also advanced to the semifinals in the 2004 Amateur. His win in Danbury renewed his confidence in his game, which has paid off now with his third win of the year. After winning the Public Links, Hrostek commented on his confidence. “I tried to take the good memories from playing in the final group, and I really drew on my win at the Danbury Amateur today,” said Hrostek. “It means a lot to me, I’ve been close in other events in the past. To win has been a goal of mine since I came back to competitive golf a few years ago. I’m just happy to be in a situation where I can compete, have fun and play some of the best golf of my life.”
