Chanticleer National Senior: Roy Hunter Leads

GREENVILLE, South Carolina (June 2, 2016) -- Roy Hunter's bogey-free 68 gives him a four-shot lead leading into the final round. First round leader Todd Henley followed his opening round 66 with a 79, leaving the door open for Roy Hunter who improved on his opening round 70 with a four-birdie and no bogey effort. His 6-under par total is a 36-hole tournament record and puts him four ahead of Pat Thompson who posted back to back 1-under 71s. Former U.S. Senior Amateur Champion Tim Miller leads the Super Senior Division after rounds of 71 and 70. He is the only player under-par and leads by four shots over Jim Rollefson and Frank Costanzo. Herb Fisher had the second hole-in-one of the week, and in CNSI history, with an ace on #4. ROUND ONE STORY Defending champion Michael Mercier and a solid field of senior golfers from around the U.S. got underway today at the Chanticleer National Senior. The tournament is played at the Chanticleer course at Greenville Country Club, a Robert Trent Jones Sr. design that is affectionately known as the "longest 6900 yard course in America. Some highlights of today's first round: -- Two time defending South Carolina Senior State Amateur Champion Todd Hendley (Greer) posted a tournament record 66, highlighted by a 31 on the homeward nine! -- Former U.S. Senior Amateur Champion Tim Miller grabbed the lead in the Super Senior Division with a stress-free 71. -- The defending champ, Michael Mercier, was going along well with two birdies and two bogeys through eight holes before suffering a disastrous quadruple bogey eight on the 9th hole. He righted the ship and came home with a 1-under 35 to post 75 on the day. -- Mike McDonald recorded the first hole-in-one in CNSI history with an ace on #14.
