Carter Claims Society of Seniors Championship

Ron Carter of Monticello, Ind. won the Dale Morey division for players 55-64 years old by four strokes over Bill Zylstra of Plymouth, Mich.

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. (Nov. 11, 2010) -- Ron Carter of Monticello, Ind., Larry Boswell of Jamestown, N.C., and Joe Estes of Atlanta were the winners Thursday in the 28th annual Society of Seniors Championship at Quail Ridge Country Club. It was the first Society victory for Boswell, the second for both Carter and Estes. Carter won the Dale Morey division for players 55-64 years old by four strokes over Bill Zylstra of Plymouth, Mich., 205 to 209, after losing his 36-hole lead on the 37th hole. “We were tied after Bill birdied the first hole today,” Carter said, “and I said to myself, ‘game’s on.’ I knew it wouldn’t be easy. I’ve been playing against these guys for years.” Playing the North course, Carter, 60, responded with six birdies on the next nine holes, at Nos. 2, 3, 6, 8, 9 and 10; made double bogey at the par-5 11th hole when he hit his third shot into a palm tree; then finished with bogey at 15 and birdie at 16 for his second straight 68. “It became a bit of a struggle on the back nine but you just have to keep playing aggressively…but not taking any stupid chances.” Zylstra, 59, made two more birdies (7 and 17) and a pair of bogeys (4 and 6) for 71, his highest score of the week. He was among six players who had opened with 68 on Tuesday. “I missed a lot of shots,” Zylstra said. “It (Carter’s performance) was fun to watch. You like to see good golf.” Carter won his age group in the Society’s Spring Classic last year at the Pensacola, Fla., CC. Earlier this year, Estes was his age group winner in the John Kline Super Seniors at nearby Delray Dunes CC. * * * BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. (Nov. 11, 2010) -- On South course at Quail Ridge Country Club, Larry Boswell of Jameston, NC won the John Owens flight for players 65-74, and Joe Estes of Atlanta was the winner among the Grand Masters (75-older). Boswell won by three strokes over David Spannbauer of Green Cove Springs, 214 to 217. Each shot 74 the final round. “I never expected to win something this big,” Boswell said. “I just came down to play some golf and visit with my friend, Ronnie Grove,” a Quail Ridge member from Raleigh, N.C. “We have played and won a lot of four-balls together over the years.” Boswell, another of the 68s Tuesday, had a birdie and three bogeys the final round. This was Boswell’s third win in Palm Beach County. In 1989 he teamed with Randy Brownlow for the International Four-Ball title at Bear Lakes CC. And in 2000, Boswell and Grove topped the senior division of the International Four-Ball at Palm Beach Polo & CC.
