GREENSBORO, N.C. (Aug. 10, 2008)--University of Alabama-Birmingham rising senior Zach Sucher won his second amateur major of the season by firing a final round of 2-under 68 to capture the 30th Cardinal Amateur Golf Tournament with a 2-under 210. Sucher opened with a first round 73 leaving him six strokes behind the lead but fought back with rounds of 67-68 to successfully defend his title.
The Mobile native becomes only the second golfer in the thirty year history of the event to successfully defended the title.
Second-round leader Reed Darsie finished in a tie for second at 1-over-par with Dustin Groves, and Nicolas Geyger.
Sucher also took a victory at the Azalea Invitational, while grabbing runner-up honors in two more majors, the Porter Cup and Palmetto Amateur.
His 3900 points gives him a 150 point lead over recent Western Amateur champ Danny Lee in the amateurgolf.com - Bridgestone Golf Player of the Year chase.
The 2008 Cardinal Amateur Championship was played on the par 70 - 7002 yard Pete Dye re-designed Cardinal Golf and Country Club in Greensboro, NC.
