GREENSBORO, N.C. (July 19, 2013) -- Taylor Coalson fired a five-under 65 in the first round of action at the 2013 Cardinal Amateur to take a three-shot lead into Round 2.
At Cardinal Golf & Country Club, Coalson, a golfer at UNC Greensboro, leads a pair of competitors at 2-under.
Drew Johnson of UT Tyler and Alejandro Tosti of Argentina are tied for second.
The inaugural Cardinal Amateur, played in 1978, was designed to offer the world's finest amateur golfers the opportunity to face the challenge of a superb golf course in an atmosphere reflecting the highest ideal of amateur athletics, with fierce competition and sportsmanlike comraderie.
Many former competitors are now on the PGA, Senior PGA and Nationwide tours.
Jay Sigel, a winner on the senior tour, has been quoted as saying that the Cardinal Am is one of the finest amateur tournaments in the country and one which he wishes he had won during his amateur career.
Notable first-round scores include: Clemson freshman and highly-ranked junior Cody Proveaux (1-over, T9), N.C. mid-amateurs Scott Harvey and Matt Crenshaw (4-over, T24).
