Canadian Senior: Lutz increases lead to two

Chip Lutz shoots 70, leads by two after second round. Paul Simson remains in second place and is two strokes back

PORT BLANFORD, NL, Canada (Aug. 24, 2011) -- Chip Lutz of Reading, Pa., increased his lead to two strokes after a second-round 1-under par (70) at the 2011 Canadian Men’s Senior Championship at Twin Rivers Golf Course in Port Blanford, N.L. Lutz, the winner of the 2011 Seniors Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, had a bogey-free front nine with one birdie. The 56-year-old, who is 5-under par through two rounds, faltered slightly today, carding a bogey on the tenth and double-bogey on the 18th hole but managed to extend his lead to two strokes thanks to three more birdies. Defending champion Paul Simson of Raleigh, N.C., remains in second place after an even-par second round (71). Simson made four birdies on the day but a costly triple bogey on the par 4 7th hole left the 2010 champ two shots back of the leader. Simson’s 2010 Senior Amateur season was one for the record books, as he became the first player ever to win the Canadian Men’s Senior Championship, USGA Senior Amateur Championship and the British Seniors Open Amateur Championship in the same year. Team British Columbia member, Gudmund Lindbjerg, from Port Moody, B.C. finished the second round in third place carding a 2-over par (73). Lindbjerg made four birdies on the day and currently sits at 1-over par (143) for the Championship. In inter-provincial competition, British Columbia was crowned the champion after a narrow one-shot victory over Ontario. The B.C. team of Lindbjerg, Tony Hatchwell of Nananimo, and Earl MacPherson of Surrey, finished with a combined 9-over par (293). The Alberta team of Jim Russell of Calgary, Floyd Kilgore of Grimshaw, and Frank Van Dornick of Camrose finished in second place at 11-over par (295). In the Super Senior division (70 years of age and older) Al Steingart of Priddis Alta., carded a 12-over par (82) to win the 2011 Super Senior Championship. The 77-year-old finished the tournament at 23-over par (83-82-165) to capture the title. Kevin Murphy, 78, of St. John’s, N.L., took runner-up honours finishing with a score of 48-over par (190).
