In the Open Division, the medalist squad of Jim Dunlap (Beaverton, Ore.) and Jay Poletiek (Portland, Ore.) had a first round bye. The second seeded team of Concordia University players Ryan Melnychuk (Grants Pass, Ore.) and Tanner Huddleston (Woodland, Wash.) was dominant in the opening match, recording a 7&6 romp over the thirty-first seeded team of Brandon Schmidt (Clackamas, Ore.) and Chris O’Hern (Hubbard, Ore.). Local players Ron Seals (Bend, Ore.) and James Chrisman (Bend, Ore.), the twentieth seeded team, earned a one-up victory in one of the closest matches of the day over the thirteenth seeded team of Matt Doud (West Linn, Ore.) and Michael Hoopes (Beaverton, Ore.).
The top three seeds in the Women’s Division earned byes, and so the quarterfinal match between the team of Debbie Friede (Washougal, Wash.) and Lisa Smego (Olympia, Wash.) and the team of Rachelle Ryan (Bend, Ore.) and Sandy Cameron (Redmond, Ore.) was the only women’s match of the day. Friede and Wright triumphed 2&1. The four remaining women’s teams will all play their semifinal matches tomorrow.
The Senior Division featured a series of blowouts in its opening round matches. Five out of the eight matches in the division needed fourteen holes or less to determine a winning side. The medalist duo of Charley Griswold (Bend, Ore.) and Don Orrell (Bend, Ore.) breezed past the sixteenth seeded team of Roland Wolfe (Redmond, Ore.) and Dave Miller (Redmond, Ore.), winning 5&4. The second seeded team of David Lydell (Beaverton, Ore.) and Mark Bowler (Portland, Ore.) also earned an easy victory, posting a 4&3 win over the fifteenth seeded pair of Kurt (Portland, Ore.) and Kevin (Beaverton, Ore.) Hiersche.
Match play continues tomorrow for each division, with the first matches teeing off at 7:30 a.m. PST.
