PLANO, Texas (July 29, 2012) -- A calm, clear morning greeted the finalists in the Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship at Gleneagles Country Club. The Queens Course challenged the players all week with its narrow fairways and numerous water hazards, but had little defense on Sunday. Both Brandon Scott and Lucas Boyd survived a long week to get to the finals and had to fight fatigue in the championship match.
Lucas Boyd jumped out to an early 2 up lead after Brandon Scott made a few bogeys. After a birdie on the 5th hole, Boyd had a commanding 3 up lead and looked to have complete control of the match. Boyd added another birdie on the 8th hole to increase the lead, before Scott was able to win the 9th hole to keep his deficit at 3 down. Lucas Boyd quickly answered with another birdie on the 10th hole to take a 4 up advantage. The match remained at that state until a costly bogey by Scott gave Lucas Boyd a dormie 5 up lead with 5 holes to play. Brandon Scott made a lengthy birdie putt on the 14th hole to extend the match, but that would be as far as it would go. Lucas Boyd made a clutch up and down on the 15th hole to earn a 4 and 3 victory and claim his first state championship. Both players earned exemptions into the 2012 Texas Mid-Amateur by way of making the final match.
