ESTERO, Fla. (Jan. 7, 2015) — Bob Kearney, a decorated senior amateur from Houston, Texas, conquered the Jack Nicklaus design at Old Corkscrew Golf Club to take home the first senior major title of the calendar year.
Winning the Old Corkscrew Senior Invitational by a stroke over Bob Stephens of Indianapolis was Kearney, who of late has won the Harvey Penick Senior in 2013 before finishing runner-up the following year while also placing in the top-five at the 2013 Trans-Miss Senior.
Kearney posted rounds of 77-74-76 to edge Stephens, who had a nice 2014 season with runner-up finishes at the SOS Championship and the Society of Seniors' newest championship, The Vinny. Stephens, along with Sam Till and James Starnes, shot the lowest round of the final day, a 75.
Richard Pfeil of Lake Geneva, Wis. finished alone in third place at 232, five shots behind Kearney.
Ron Carter, the defending champion, finished tied for eleventh at 237 (79-81-77).
In the Super Senior division, Berger Warner Ocala, Fla. won a playoff over John Blank of Frostburg, Md. at 229. Berger got off to a great start with an opening-round 71, the only under-par round of the tournament, and managed to hold on for the win with 80-78 down the stretch.
