Barry Lane prevails in eclectic Grey Goose World Par 3 field

It’s an eclectic field at the Grey Goose World Par 3 Championship, and in the end, Champions Tour player Barry Lane prevailed. Unlike in most other events, scores were in the 50s, an international field of varying resumes followed him, and he had to overtake a Canadian twentysomething teaching pro to get the title.

All in a weekend’s work in Bermuda.

Lane, the 58-year-old Englishman who made five Champions Tour starts in 2018, was 2 under for two rounds at Fairmont Southampton Turtle Hill Golf Club in Southampton, Bermuda. He birdied his final two holes of the day on Saturday to edge Miguel Angel Martin by one shot. Martin has been a member of the European Tour for more than 20 seasons.

It was a leaderboard packed with talent from all areas of the game. Rebecca Lee-Bentham, a 26-year-old professional from Canada, had the first-round lead with a 3-under 51 at the short layout, but fell to 10th with a final-round 61.

Chip Beck, a four-time PGA Tour winner and three-time Ryder Cupper, was T-6 with his 2-over total.

The top amateur was Canada’s TJ Rule, who was 10 over for 36 holes. Three amateurs tied for 24th another shot back, including Damian Palanyandi, Christopher Phillips and Jevon Roberts.

Outside of the overall division, there were three separate amateur divisions. Rule won the men’s amateur division, while Tariqah Walikraam was the top player in the women’s division with a 16-over total.

David Moser, at 5 over, topped the senior men’s division.
