Azalea Senior: Cloninger leads early

Rick Cloninger shot a 4-under 67 and leads 2-time champ Brady Exber by a shot at The Country Club of Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. (Oct. 2, 2013) -- Rick Cloninger fired a first-round 4-under 67 and leads by a shot at the 2013 Senior Azalea at The Country Club of Charleston. Cloninger is one shot up on Brady Exber and two ahead of Chris Corn and Ramiro Romo, who sit tied for third after 2-under 69s to open play. Cloninger, of course, is fresh off another win at the Carolinas Golf Association Senior Chamionship. Exber is a two-time defending champion at the event. Romo, meanwhile, is the father of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. Cloninger managed four birdies on each side Wednesday to balance against a pair of bogeys and a double. He'll take the first-round lead into Round 2 on the 1925 Seth Raynor design. Bob Howe leads by one shot in the Super Senior Division thanks to a first-round 67. He leads Ted Smith and Tim Miller, who sit tied for second. For full field results, use the link below.
