Anthony keeps Billy Bell Cup streak alive with Rangel by his side

Jason Anthony has won the Billy Bell Cup all three years it has been played. This year, he just had a different partner.

Del Rio Country Club in Modesto, Calif., seems to fit Jason Anthony’s eye. Despite having a different partner at the Billy Bell Cup, Anthony once again cruised to the top of the leaderboard. Anthony, the 2018 San Francisco City winner who nearly defended that title this spring, partnered with Jeffrey Rangel for a winning 9-under total.

Anthony and Rangel opened with 7-under 65 and followed it with a 2-under 70. That left them one ahead of Patrick Burda and Brett Viboch, who had a more consistent showing with back-to-back rounds of 8-under 68.

Anthony, in fact, has never finished anywhere but on top since this tournament began in 2017. The first two times, he did that with Nick Moore. But this weekend, Anthony brought in Rangel, an old friend from the days when both were competing on the Canadian Tour.

“Playing professional golf before and then being out here in amateur golf, it’s a lot different,” Rangel said. “We’re both happy-go-lucky, just have fun. It’s just so different, you make a bogey and it’s no skin off your back anymore. We don’t’ get to see each other a lot and we like to go play golf and have fun.”

Mark Morgan and Tony Padilla won the senior title on the second playoff hole. Ron Johnson and Mark Miller finished on top of the super senior division with a 1-over 145 total.
