MAMARONECK, New York (July 13, 2008) -- Frank Fairman and Nathan Smith of Pennsylvania's Punxsutawney Country Club (yes, the groundhog Punxutawney) took home the prestigious John G. Anderson Memorial title today with a 3 & 2 victory over Buzz Baker and Kip Guidry of The Houstonian Golf Glub in Texas.
The Pennsylvania duo made a statement during qualifying by taking the medal with a 10-under 134 total on a U.S. Open layout that defends par on each and every hole.
In the Senior Division, Jody Vasquez and Jim Grainger of Colonial Country Club in Ft. Worth defeated Jim Graham and Neil Christie of the host clubin 20 holes. That the match for the senior title should go so long was only fitting, as both Vasquez/Grainger and Graham/Christie survived nail-biters to get there. Graham and Christie, at 2-down with three to play in the semi-finals charged on to victory by winning the final three holes; Vasquez and Grainger went 22 holes before winning their semifinal match.
