MAMARONECK, N.Y. — Round one got underway Thursday at the 79th annual Anderson Memorial Four-Ball Invitational, set at the renowned Winged Foot Golf Club's West Course. Virginians Roger Newsom and Adam Horton posted a bogey-free round of 63, seven-under, to lead by a stroke. The team hails from Elizabeth Manor Golf & Country Club in Portsmouth.
Nine teams finished the day under par, and another six are in at even-par, including defending champions Luis Barco and Patricio Alzamora of Peru.
Sitting in second place at 64 are Dan Crockett and Philip Smith of The Country Club, followed by Joe Saladino and Dave Boccia of Huntington Country Club on New York's Long Island at 65.
ABOUT THE JOHN G. ANDERSON MEMORIAL
Maybe one of the most difficult invitations to receive of all the invitational four-ball tournaments, The Anderson has been hosted at Winged Foot for over 75 years. Anderson is known for his coverage of Francis Oiumet's U.S. Open victory in 1913 at The Country Club. When Anderson died young at the age of 49 in 1933, Winged Foot's members created the tournament to honor his legacy.
