AGC La Costa Classic: Williams, Goolsby, and Moore Among Leaders

CARLSBAD, Calif. (January 8th, 2017) -- The first annual AmateurGolf.com La Costa Classic began today at La Costa Golf Resort. Playing the Champions Course, Cal State San Marcos sophomore Jake Williams fired a 3-under 69 to lead the division. Teeing off on No. 11 Williams started his round with seven straight pars from holes 11-17 before he broke through with a string of three birdies in a row beginning on the 18th and ending on the 2nd. He added birdies on holes 5 and 7 to get to 4-under but finished with a bogey on the par-5 10th to post the only round in the 60's. Trailing Williams by one is UNLV freshman Justin Chong who posted a 2-under 70 which included a 3-under 33 on his back-nine. Ryan Maund, Joshua Diaz, and Robin Kang each share third place after 1-under 71's. Derek Castillo played easily the most up-and-down round of the day. Castillo teed off on hole 14 and was even-par through his first four holes before back-to-back seven's on the par-5 18th and par-4 1st put him at five-over on the day. However, a hole-out eagle on the par-4 4th and another eagle on the par-5 10th brought him back to 1-over on the day. SENIOR DIVISION Rick Goolsby of Fullerton, Calif. leads the senior division after a 1-over 73 that included three birdies and four bogeys. Scott Stewart trails by two shots after a round of 75 which included an eagle 3 on the par-5 10th. Four players are tied for third just three shots behind including Tom McKee, Chris Hyland, Michael Harding, and Bruce Loman. WOMEN'S DIVISION Haley Moore and Daniela Anastasi share the lead in the women's division after rounds of 1-under 72. Moore, the AmateurGolf.com San Diego Amateur champion, tallied three birdies against two bogeys while Anastasi played very consistently, recording 17 pars and one birdie. Monday's final round shotgun start will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Legends Course of La Costa Golf Resort.
