BRENTWOOD, Calif. (March 8, 2014) -- The 2014 amateurgolf.com Diablo Valley Amateur kicked off Saturday with great scores at Deer Ridge Country Club.
Jim Coon of Orinda shot 4-under 67 to take the overall lead by a shot over Daniel Griffiths, who shot 68. Taylor Hobin is two shots back thanks to an opening-round 69.
Five players shot par or better as scoring conditions were optimal. Coon was the hottest, though, notching five birdies and an eagle on No. 4.
The net flight has amateurgolf.com Tour standout Vince Steele with a commanding five-shot lead (7-under 64) over Dennis Kunz and Kevin Logan who both shot 69. Six players in the net flight shot par or better.
The second and final round will tee off Sunday morning at Shadow Lakes Golf Course.
