Lamar University Narrowly Wins SMC/Merrill Lynch Invitational
PEBBLE BEACH, CA (April 12, 2006) -– Lamar University shot a 297 in the final round as a team to pull out a one stroke victory over Xavier University on Tuesday afternoon at Poppy Hills in Pebble Beach, CA. The Cardinals trailed Xavier by one stroke as a team heading into Tuesday’s final round.
The two-day tournament held on the prestigious course came down to the final pairing, when Lamar’s Oliver Bekker turned in a 71 on the par 72 course to close the day for his team, while Xavier’s John Steibich finished with a 73. Lamar finished the tournament 27 strokes over par.
Fresno State rounded out the top three, finishing with a 908 overall, including a 305 on the final day.
The Individual title was won by Fresno State’s Jason Anthony, who won in a playoff by default. Lamar’s Oliver Bekker tied Anthony, with both players totaling 218 (+2). Streibich finished third in the individual race with a 220.
