PNGA Master-40: Winter wins 2nd
Powell Butte, Ore. (May 17, 2013) – Bill Winter of Beaverton, Ore. capped off an impressive week of golf with a 1-up victory over Norm Bradley of Kelowna, B.C. to win the 38th Pacific Northwest Men’s Master-40 Amateur Championship at Brasada Ranch in Powell Butte, Oregon.

Winter got off to a great start by going par-birdie-par on the first three holes of the match to go 2-up on Bradley. But Winter lost his ground after his strong start and made back-to-back bogies, which Bradley took full advantage of by answering with a par and birdie to put the match back to all-square through six holes. The match went into the back nine all-square and Winter made his move on the 10th hole making par to Bradley’s bogie to go1-up. From there the match was neck-to-neck and neither player could make any positive advancement in the match. The match went all the way to the 18th hole and Winter held on to his 1-up lead to win.

Winter’s last three matches (quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals) were all taken to the 18th hole and were 1-up victories. ” I had some tough matches down the stretch and there was no give up against anyone out here this week” said Winter. “It feels good to finish on top and sometimes I felt Igot a little lucky to get here, but it feels good” added Winter. Winter, the former University of Portland golf coach, won the Pacific Northwest Men’s Master-40 in 2005 when it was played at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Oregon. He is one of Oregon’s top amateur players and represented the Oregon Golf Association (OGA) at the USGA State Team Championship in 2012. He has also played on two victorious OGA teams that won the PNGA Cup Matches.

The championship called for 36 holes of stroke play qualifying which seeded the competitors into match play brackets. All matches were 18 holes and are played at scratch.

Next stop for the Pacific Northwest Golf Association will be the PNGA Senior and Super Senior Amateur Championship at Marine Drive Golf Club in Vancouver, British Columbia on June 11-13.
