MONTGOMERY, TX (March 20, 2006)--A full field of 90 players will be vying for the 2006 South Regional Amateur title from Friday, March 24 through Sunday, March 26, at the challenging Walden on Lake Conroe Country Club course in Montgomery.
Defending champion Jonathan Mathias of San Antonio heads an exceptionally strong field, which includes two other past South Amateur champions: Mike Booker and Andy Cooper, both of The Woodlands, who won the event in 2004 and 2003, respectively. Also entered are Shawn Westacott and Trevor Hyde, both of Kerrville, who teamed up to win the South Region Four-Ball last month at River Ridge Golf Club in Sealy.
“The South Region Amateur field keeps getting stronger every year,” said TGA Regional Director for South Texas, Jeff Morton. “The field was full well before the entry deadline, and a big part of that is because Walden on Lake Conroe is such a well thought of course, and it is going to be a great test of golf for these guys.”
Format for the event is 54-hole individual stroke play, and competitors will have a little something extra to shoot for in this year’s championship. In the past only the winner earned an exemption into the State Amateur, but the TGA Championship Committee instituted change and will now award the top three finishers an exemption.
