Australian Women's Am: Lydia Ko moves on
SOUTH OAKLEY, VICTORIA, Australia (Jan. 17, 2013) --
World Number 1 New Zealander Lydia Ko continued her
march towards defending her title with a comfortable 6&5
win over Jessica Dengate (NSW) in the first round of
Match Play at the Australian Women’s Amateur
Championship.
It was commanding performance from Ko with birdies on
her opening five holes for the day.
Joint top qualifier Grace Lennon (VIC) lost 2&1 to fellow
Victorian Lauren Hibbert.
Four-time US Mid-Amateur champion Meghan Stasi also
progressed with a 1up victory over Ellen Davies-Graham
(QLD).
Minjee Lee (WA) came back from 5 down to defeat Ebony
Heard (SA) 2up.
Japan’s Asuka Kashiwabara defeated Lauren Sinclair (VIC)
6&4 while Hayley Bettencourt (WA) defeated Su Hyun-Oh
(VIC) 1up.
Kiwi Julianne Alvarez beat Carly Beck (NSW) 3&2.
The second and third round Match Play will be played on
Friday.
ABOUT THE Australian Women's Amateur
The Australian Men's and Women's Amateur
Championships are Australia's
oldest Amateur Golf Championships, with both having
been played since 1894.
Long held as a match play event, in 2021 the format
changed to 72 holes of
stroke play.
