GREENVILLE, Miss. (Oct. 30, 2012) -- The annual matches between the top amateurs and the top Mississippi PGA players were played at Greenville Country Club October 27-28, 2012.
Four-ball and foursome matches were played on Saturday In blustery, cold conditions. Cart covers and heaters were a premium in the morning matches. The amateurs took an early lead winning 5 of the 6 four-ball points. The teams switched up partners for the afternoon foursome matches. The afternoon matches started out pretty close, but the amateurs came out on top winning 4 points.
The Amateurs went into the singles matches on Sunday with a comfortable lead of 9-3, needing 3 1/2 Points to win the cup back. In 2011, the MPGA came out strong in the singles matches winning 8 points to beat the amateurs and take back ownership of the cup. 2011 was the first since 2006 that the MPGA won the cup. MGA captain, Greg Gough, was hoping his singles pairings would secure 3.5 points early to clinch the cup.
The amateurs won 8 of the 12 points on Sunday to bring "The Cup" Back to the amateur team. The annual matches are about bragging rights and friendly competition. Lows in the high 30s made for a cold start each day.
