Swift leads at Alabama Mid-Am
ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. (Oct. 6, 2012) -- The top three places in the 24th State Mid-Amateur Championship at Willow Point Golf & Country Club in Alexander City are all held by former Mid-Amateur champions.

Will Swift of Hoover leads the way after a seven-under-par 65. He is a two-time former State Mid-Amateur champion (2006 and 2007), as well as winning eight other Alabama Golf Association titles.

He leads 2010 Mid-Amateur champion Steve Hudson of Birmingham by two and 2009 Mid-Amateur champion Mobile’s Robert Nelson by three.

Hudson also won the 2011 State Senior, while Nelson is a State Junior champion dating back to 1978.

But it was Swift’s day. Starting on the back nine he reeled off five birdies (Nos. 10, 11, 13, 15 and 16) to make the turn in 31. Two more birdies (Nos. 2 and 6) followed on the front nine for an unblemished card of 11 pars and seven birdies.

Hudson matched Swift’s seven birdie haul, but a double bogey on No. 11, his second hole of the day, slowed him down a little. He rebounded to shoot 67.

On a picture postcard day 14 players broke par on this beautiful layout adjacent to Lake Martin.
