PORTLAND, Ore. (Sept. 26, 2012) -- On another beautiful, September day at Riverside Golf & Country Club there were few surprises in the Championship Flight as most of the top seeded players advanced to play in tomorrow's matches.
Men’s Championship Flight #1 seed Michael Kloenne of West Linn, Ore., advanced with a 4 & 3 win over Steve Robinson of Tigard, Ore. Kloenne went down early after a bogey five on the first hole, but got the match back to all square after hole seven and never looked back on his way to advancing.
2011 runner-up Gregg Guernsey of Vancouver, Wash., continued his strong play getting off to a fast start going 3 up after three holes on his way to a 6 & 5 win. Guernsey will now face 2012 Public Links Champion & 2012 Oregon Mid-Amateur runner-up Byron Patton of Tigard, Ore., who advanced with a 2 & 1 win over Bob Harrington of Portland, Ore.
In the rare upset on Wednesday, #22 seed Doug Banks of Tualatin, Ore., advanced with a 1 up win over #6 seed Randy Mahar of Portland, Ore. The back-and-forth match was won by Banks with a birdie the par-4 379 yard 18th hole.
Defending champion Scott Hval of Portland, Ore., advanced with a 4 & 3 win over Ken Davidson of Clackamas, Ore.
Also advancing were Denny Taylor of Gladstone, Ore., with a 2 & 1 win over Glen Clark of Medford, Ore. Brad Karns of Vancouver, Wash., with a 4 & 2 win over Billy Anderson of Eugene, Ore.
Glen Luikart of Tualatin, Ore., strolled to the quarterfinal matches with a 5 & 4 win over Mark Wilson of Oakland, Ore.
In the women’s Championship Flight quarterfinal matches, defending champion Loree McKay of Hillsboro, Ore., advanced with a 4 & 3 win over Charisse Spada of Portland, Ore., McKay will now face six-time Senior Amateur Champion Joan Edwards-Powell of Portland, Ore., in a 2011 Senior Amateur finals rematch. Edwards-Powell defeated Leilani Norman of Eugene, Ore., 3 & 2 to advance.
Also advancing were Debbie Friede of Portland, Ore. with a 5 & 4 win over Katy Wright of Camas, Ore. and Rachel Wittington of Lake Oswego, Ore., with a 5 & 3 win over Penny Saenguraiporn of Lake Oswego, Ore.
Men’s Quarterfinal matches continue tomorrow at 7:30, followed by semifinal matches at 12:00, with women’s Semifinal matches continuing tomorrow morning at 7:58.
Play will conclude with Championship matches in both the men’s & women’s divisions on Friday at 8:30 & 8:45 respectively.

golfers 50 years of age or older with USGA
Handicap Indexes of 18.1 or less and who are
members in
good
standing of an OGA member club. The field will be
limited to the lowest 96 qualified men. The
defending
champion and 31 finishers from the 18-hole stroke
play qualifier will advance to the single elimination
Championship flight match play portion of the
competition, with the remaining entrants placed in
single elimination match play flights according to
score. There will be NO age bracket flights.
