NC Match Play: Harvey-Crenshaw in final
GREENSBORO, NC (Aug. 4, 2012) -– Two of the most familiar names in North Carolina amateur golf advance to the finals of the North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship. Number one ranked amateur in the Carolinas, Scott Harvey of Greensboro, will face reigning North Carolina Amateur champion Matthew Crenshaw of Burlington in Sunday’s championship match at 7:45am.
The road to the finals for Harvey was much difficult than Crenshaw’s. Harvey defeated Beau Cutts of Henderson 3&1 in the morning quarterfinal. Harvey then faced Carter Page of Waynesville in the afternoon semifinals. Page, who will attend N.C. State this fall, held a 1 up advantage standing on the 18th tee. Harvey was able to win the 18th hole with a birdie to force extra holes. Harvey and Page tied the first four playoff holes with pars. On the 23rd hole, Page’s approach shot sailed over the green into the fringe and he was unable to convert an up-and-down from behind the green. Harvey then two-putted to win the match.
Crenshaw beat Chad Cox of Charlotte 3&2 in the quarterfinals. He then outlasted Western Carolina University’s JT Poston of Hickory 2&1 to advance to the finals.
