Texas Mid-Am Match Play: Wheeler (66) is Medalist
Christoper Wheeler
PLANO, Texas (July 26, 2012) – The 2012 Mid-
Amateur Match Play Championship got
underway Thursday at the Queen’s Course at
Gleneagles Country Club. 18 holes of stroke
play qualifying is the first step in a grueling
test of golf and fitness. A ninety player field
started the day with intentions of being in the
low thirty-two and advancing to match play.
After a very hot day, Christopher Wheeler was
able to take the best advantage of good
scoring conditions to earn the top seed with a
round of 66.
Wheeler made four birdies on the front nine
and added another on the back to fire a five
under par round of 66. Trevor Hyde, the
runner-up in this championship last year, got
off to another good start. Hyde made five
birdies in his round of 68 to earn the second
seed. Jeff Leach was the only other player to
break 70 with a two under par round of 69
which was good enough to earn the third seed
heading into match play.
In all thirteen players shot rounds of par or
better. An exciting finish to the day came
when five players battled through a sudden
death playoff for the final qualifying spot. Mike
McCarten, a member of Gleneagles CC, earned
the last spot a clutch par on the first playoff
hole to complete the match play draw.
This year’s championship will be contested on
the Queen’s Course. Designed by Bruce Devlin
and Robert Von Hagge, the par 72 layout plays
at 6,901 yards and puts an emphasis on
accuracy. Many lakes come into play and when
the wind blows, she is not quite the lady her
name suggests. The course, along with the
King’s Course, was designed and opened in
1985. Gleneagles Country Club has hosted
many championships in recent years including
the 2005 North Mid-Amateur and the 2011
North Amateur. Gleneagles also has the
distinction of hosting the IFQ-A, which is the
only final qualifying site in the U.S. for the
British Open. 2012 will be the fourth
consecutive year that Gleneagles will host the
IFQ-A.
