2005 Oregon Mid-Am Champion
BANDON, ORE. (Sunday, October 9, 2005) - Jeff Nielson of Gresham, Ore. (Persimmon CC) who had the low round of the day scoring 1-under par 70 to force a playoff with Jay Poletiek of Portland, Ore. (Rose City GC) who lost his first round lead on the 6,765-yard Bandon Trails layout. But it was Poletiek who birdied the first playoff hole to earn his first Mid-Amateur title. Both players finished the 36-hole stroke play tournament tied at 2-under par 141.
First round co-leader, Tyler Paldi of Gresham, Ore. (Awbrey Glen GC) was alone in third place shooting 69-74-143 while OGA Tournament of Champions winner Jim Dunlap of Tigard, Ore. (Pumpkin Ridge GC) shot a consistent 72-72-144 to finish in fourth.
Earlier in the day, the Women's Division completed their first round at the 5,771 yard, par-72 Bandon Dunes Course with defending champions Karla Kalian of Brush Prairie completing her last two holes with pars to finish at 40-39-79, two strokes ahead of Mary Budke of Eugene, Ore. and three strokes ahead of Marcia Fisher of Canby, Ore.
The afternoon was a different story at the 5,746-yard Bandon Trails layout as Budke came from behind shooting 79-81--160 to earn her first Mid-Amateur title over two-time champions Kalian and Fisher.
Earlier this year, Poletiek qualified for match play at the British Mid-Amateur and won his first match to make it into the round of 32. Budke is an 8-time Oregon Amateur Champion and the 1972 U.S. Women's Amateur Champion. Budke was also Captain of the victorious 2002 Curtis Cup Team, and Bandon Dunes Resort will host the 2006 Curtis Cup, July 29-30 next year.
