Joyner and Smith lead at the Texas South Senior Amateur
Katy, TX (April 3, 2012) – Windy conditions greeted the field for the start of the 2012 South Senior Amateur Championship hosted by The Club at Falcon Point in Katy. As the sun broke through the morning’s overcast skies, Owen Joyner holds a slim one stroke lead in the Senior Division while Bob Smith sits four strokes ahead of a trio of players in the Super Senior Division heading into the final round.

Joyner, of The Woodlands, started his day on the front side and was able to card four birdies and a lone bogey to make the turn at 3-under par 33. Steady play on his back nine, which included two birdies and two bogeys, allowed for Joyner to sit atop the leaderboard at 3-under par 69 (33-36) and take a one stroke lead heading into the final round.

Katy’s David Pocknall, hot off a victory in the TGA’s South Mid-Amateur Championship at the end of March, continued his birdie barrage with five birdies on his opening nine holes to turn at 5-under par 31. A sixth birdie on the par four 10th hole would be Pocknall’s last of the day though. Unable to keep up his blistering pace, the 2010 South Senior Amateur champion stumbled as he came in, with two bogeys and a double bogey over his last five holes to finish the day at 2-under par 70 (31-39).

Sitting just two strokes off of Joyner’s lead at 1-under par 71 is Kerrville’s Dennis Emerson and Mike Booker, of The Woodlands. Emerson’s opening round consisted of three birdies and two bogeys, while Booker was able to card two birdies and one bogey.

The 2011 State Senior Amateur champion Ron Kilby, of McAllen, is four strokes back at 1-over par 73. Houston’s Bob Smith finished his first round in the Super Senior Division with a four stroke lead at even par 72 thanks to three birdies on his opening nine to turn at 3-under par 33. Smith found trouble soon after making the turn with a double bogey and bogey on the 10th and 11th holes, respectively. A second bogey on the par four 14th hole was quickly erased with a birdie on the par four 15th hole, leading to his even par 72 (33-39).

Three players will look to move up the leaderboard during the final round as Spring’s Peter Kirchner, Houston’s James Rath, and Don Grider, of Georgetown, all sit in a tie for second at 4-over par 76.
