Auburn wins Hootie at Bulls Bay
AWENDAW, S.C. (March 27, 2012) – The No. 2 Auburn men’s golf team picked up its third win of the season, and seventh under Nick Clinard, after winning the Hootie at Bulls Bay by nine strokes over No. 24 Virginia on Tuesday in Awendaw, S.C. Sophomore Niclas Carlsson won the individual title after carding a 1-under 71 in the third round to finish at 5-under 211, one stroke ahead of Auburn junior Blayne Barber who finished tied for second and two strokes ahead of senior Will McCurdy, who finished in fourth.“It was a great win for our program,” head coach Nick Clinard said. “We had three guys play very, very well today in the final round in extreme wind conditions and tough pin placements. We have a long way to go to be the best team in the nation. We are still very immature when faced with adversity, and we need to be tougher mentally. Today was indeed a difficult day, but I don’t expect to have to count a 79. We have to get back to work this week and try and get better. We need some guys to step up, and play to their talent level.”Carlsson entered the day in ninth place and was one of only ten players to shot an even par or better in the third round. The win marks Carlsson’s second win of his career.“Niclas picked up his second win of his young career, and has worked extremely hard this semester,” Clinard continued. “He is learning what it takes to be great and holding himself accountable on a daily basis. I am proud of him.”Barber shot a 2-over 74 in Tuesday’s round to secure his fifth top-five finish of the season. After starting the day tied for 15th, McCurdy carded a 2-under 70 in the final round to finish in fourth place, his first top-five finish of the season.Junior Dominic Bozzelli finished tied for 19th after shooting at 3-over, while junior Michael Hebert placed tied for 53rd at 12-over.
